abc—xyz is a small, independent design studio founded by Julian Morey. The studio’s approach combines historical appropriation with contemporary art direction to create logotypes, brand marks and identities that are iconic and challenging as other forms of commercial imagery. Morey’s crafted yet sometimes unconventional approach to typography often leads to work that provokes an emotional response from it’s viewer whilst retaining a longevity that sets it apart from the latest fashions.

After graduating from Central Saint Martins School of Art in 1988 Morey joined Peter Saville Associates where he collaborated on designs for Factory Records, New Order and The Haçienda, amongst others. Saville’s minimal approach and refined style remains an influence to this day.

For over 20 years Morey has worked with a wide range of clients ranging from advertising agencies and nightclubs to department stores and luxury brands. As well as working with companies that have included Giorgio Armani, Liberty of London, Mr. Hare, Royal Mail and Swarovski he has collaborated as consultant to a number of London’s leading design studios; most notably Aboud Creative, Graphic Thought Facility and Pentagram.

Morey is the founder of the contemporary typeface foundry Club-21 and graphic-arts publishing company Editions Eklektic; his work has exhibited internationally and been reproduced through a variety of publications. He has taught and lectured at art colleges throughout the UK and contributes as a writer to a variety of design journals.
